A log palace constructed in the grand manner of the sprawling hideaways of the Alps and Rockies, this was an exclusive private resort until 1970, when it was converted to a hotel. Its most striking feature is the six-sided granite fireplace that occupies the center of the three-story lobby. But what really stuns is the roster of activities available. To those listed below add clay shooting, guided nature walks and hikes, ice skating, cross-country ski trails, and curling. Much of this is undertaken on the adjacent Kenauk preserve, a protected natural environment of over 2,630 hectares (6,500 acres). After a day of that, hunger is addressed in several restaurants, where the food and service are better than can usually be expected of resorts of this size.
