Named for the wild horses that still roam the desert hereabouts, this resort is located a 20-minute drive south of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on the Gila River Indian Reservation. The location is unique in the valley in that guest rooms look out across miles of undeveloped desert, which gives this resort a remote feel. Throw in horseback riding, a full-service spa featuring desert-inspired treatments, a golf course, a nature trail along a 2 1/2-mile-long re-creation of the Gila River, and a pool with a water slide, and you'll find plenty to keep you busy here. The resort is owned by the Maricopa and Pima tribes, who go out of their way to share their culture with resort guests. There is even a cultural concierge on staff. Guest rooms have great beds, small patios, and large bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. The menu in Kai, the main dining room, focuses on the indigenous flavors of the Southwest. The only drawback here is that the resort is a long way from the action in Scottsdale. Plan to stay put for a few days.
