This hotel is set on 28 acres above Davis Bay, about a 30-minute drive from Christiansted. It's one of the largest hotels on St. Croix and lies adjacent to an outstanding golf course, in a lovely, lush setting on a white-sand beach whose turquoise waters boast fine snorkeling. Try as it may, this resort never achieves the class and style of Buccaneer. Originally built as a Rock Resort, it has suffered hurricane attacks and management changes, and today it's hot on the trail of the time-share market.
Guests are housed in red-roofed, two-story buildings, each of which contains six units. The accommodations are furnished in mahogany with Danish design; each has a balcony partially concealed from outside view, overlooking either the garden or the sea. Rooms have an upscale flair, with louvered doors, tile floors, mahogany trim, and sometimes such extras as screened-in porches with rocking chairs. Bathrooms are luxurious and roomy, with oversized showers (with seats) and tiled vanities. If you want the very finest room here, ask for the Davis Bay Suite, which was a former Rockefeller private beach home. Its veranda alone is capable of entertaining 50 people, should that many drop in on you.
