Too often Arizona resorts are far too isolated from the desert. Not so this resort in the Santa Catalina foothills. With natural desert coming right up to the patios of some rooms, this fairly small and reasonably priced resort is a favorite of mine. Take an early morning walk or horseback ride on the resort's nature trail and you'll see all kinds of birds and other desert critters. Built in 1912 as a private estate, Westward Look is the oldest resort in Tucson and although it doesn't have its own golf course, it does have an excellent health spa, riding stables, and plenty of tennis courts. The large guest rooms, all of which were renovated a few years ago, have a Southwestern flavor and private patios or balconies with great views of the city. For the ultimate in Southwest luxury, opt for one of the stargazer spa suites, which have private outdoor hot tubs. The Gold Room restaurant serves excellent Continental and Southwestern cuisine and utilizes herbs and vegetables grown on site in the chef's garden. If you aren't a golfer but do enjoy resort amenities, this is one of your best Tucson choices.
