On a cobblestone courtyard in the Old Port, the Regency boasts the city's premier hotel location. But it's got more than location going for it -- this is also one of the most architecturally striking and well-managed hotels in the state. Sitting in an 1895 brick armory, the hotel is thoroughly modern within, offering attractive rooms appointed with many amenities. The architects had to work within the quirky layout of the building; as a result, the top-floor rooms lack windows but have skylights, and windows are at knee-height in some units. The hotel has several different types of rooms and suites; for a splurge, try one of the corner units, offering gas fireplaces, CD players, sitting areas, and newly added Jacuzzis. Staff is extremely professional, the health club is very good, and the hotel is also home to both a good downstairs restaurant (The Armory -- fine dining) and a bar that's the best quiet place in Portland to sip a drink and talk business, hold hands, or watch a ballgame on the TV. The only complaint I've heard is that some walls are a bit thin; on weekends, Old Port revelry may penetrate even the dense brick outer walls. But that's a small price to pay for such luxury, location, and professionalism.
