Located at the north end of downtown, on the Main Street trolley line, the 18-floor Marriott connected to the convention center is primarily a convention hotel. Recently renovated from the ground up, the hotel is a bit off the beaten track, surrounded mostly by government buildings. But the trolley will quickly take you up and down Main Street where there's more action. The lobby is built on a grand scale with soaring ceilings, marble floors, and traditional furnishings that are a welcome contrast to the stark modernity of the lobby. My favorite rooms here are the corner rooms, which have angled walls that provide a bit more character. However, the standard king rooms are also good bets. The top three floors are the hotel's concierge levels and offer extra amenities. For views of the Mississippi, ask for a room on the 10th floor or higher. The hotel's main restaurant is a casual spot serving American and international fare. Breakfast and coffee are served in a small cafe.
