French Polynesia Overview

The largest and most heavily populated island in French Polynesia, Tahiti has evoked the magical image of an idyllic tropical paradise since 1767, when canoe loads of young Tahitian vahines gave uninhibited, bare-breasted receptions to a British navy captain named Capt. Samuel Wallis and his crew in the HMS Dolphin. Sent in search of a mysterious southern continent, Wallis instead discovered Tahiti.
